  • Students learn to observe, report and encode the weather elements required for “Routine” METAR and “Special” SPECI Aviation Weather reports.
  • Students learn the process and criteria for issuing “Routine” METAR and “Special” SPECI Aviation Weather reports.
  • Practical experience taking METAR and SPECI observations, gathering data using actual weather instruments.
  • Students will demonstrate ability to observe, record, and encode METAR and SPECI reports for transmission.
  • Students become familiar with the Weather Service Operational Handbook (WSOH 8) and are introduced to the Federal Meteorological Handbook (FMH-1).
  • Each student receives a comprehensive manual, which features self-tests after each chapter and a final self-examination designed to gauge examination readiness.
  • Intensive end-of-class review.
  • We are usually able to arrange for a National Weather Service Executive to administer the Weather Observer Certification Examination on the last day of class.
  • Each student receives a course completion certificate.
